No Longer a One Car Family

Last weekend we went out looking for a minivan and found one and bought it! Hurray for having my own car again. :) We got a silver 2006 Kia Sedona and I love it. Originally we test drove a 2008 Sedona because that's what they had out at the lot and it was nice and all that we wanted except for the price tag and we told them so and it turned out that the day before they had traded in a 2006 that was practically identical to the 2008, color included, except for the miles and the price and the tires. Since they had traded it in the day before they hadn't had a chance to detail it yet, so they did it on Monday and delivered it to our house (I liked that better anyways).

It is so much fun to drive and we're getting excited about all the stuff that we can haul around in it. For example Andrew is going to build more planter boxes in our backyard and we can now fit more bricks and supplies without crowding the backseat of our car.

I think Peter likes riding in the van better than riding in the Altima because he's up higher and can see out the windows better. It's a lot easier to put him in and out of the car and it's also a lot easier to feed him and change his diaper when we're out running errands.

Funny story... We back our cars into our driveway and the first time that I parked the van with the Altima in the driveway already I came really close to hitting the solar powered lights we set up.

I mean REALLY close

I stopped here without getting out and looking.

That's crazy close.

Andrew's Birthday/Valentine's Day

Andrew's birthday is also Valentine's day. He always tries to do something for me but I don't really care that much about Valentine's day. I try to make it more about his birthday than Valentine's day. Andrew picked Sheppard's Pie for his birthday dinner. We found an awesome recipe in the America's Test Kitchen cookbook but instead of using lamb we use pork butt roast, which is from the shoulder not the rump, and it is delicious!!! I got two giant cupcakes for Andrew's birthday cake and put candles on one of them.

Happy Birthday to you!!!

Happy Birthday to you!!

Happy Birthday dear Andrew!!!
Happy Birthday to you!!!

I got him a gun case for his birthday. It hasn't come yet but he's really excited about it.

Andrew built a planter and planted strawberries and marigolds (to keep the crickets away) in it. That was my Valentine's day gift. I am super excited to have strawberries in our garden. Hurray for growing our own food!!!

Watch Andrew's Trees Grow

Andrew is monitoring the growth of his trees based on these pictures. The interesting thing is all of the trees are expected to grow to about 15-16 feet tall.

Pot Rack and Trees

Two of Andrew's brothers and their families came down to our house and hung out with us on Saturday. Us girls spent our time talking and playing with the kids and the boys found some "handy" things to do around the house. :) They helped Andrew hang our pot rack and plant the last two trees and install the drip hoses for watering the trees.

Andrew's Fruit Trees

Ever since we knew we were moving to Arizona we knew that we wanted fruit trees in our yard. Andrew has been particularly excited about it and he's been doing a lot of research about fruit trees in Arizona, etc. On Saturday we went to the Nursery to pick out some fruit trees for our backyard. We asked all our questions and walked around and thought about it for a while and decided to pick out the trees we wanted. We ended up picking out: Lemon, Tangelo, Red Grapefruit, White Peach and Asian Pear trees. The trees are all dwarf except the Asian Pear tree; we chose to do this because we didn't want to have to climb really high to get our fruit. They are also all self pollinating which is nice because we didn't have to buy two of the same kind of tree to get fruit. In fact the Lemon tree and the Grapefruit tree already have fruit on them, they're not ripe but should be in 4 months or so as long as the trees don't drop the fruit. Citrus trees will do that but other fruit trees won't.

The trees were delivered yesterday (a down fall of not having a pickup truck) and Andrew came home and went out in his work clothes and started digging a hole. We needed to go grocery shopping and I knew that if we didn't go right away he would get too into digging the holes and planting the trees that we would never make it to the store. I forget how early it gets dark since it's fall and we don't do day light savings time down here (personally I think we should spring forward and then stop changing the time). Anyway it was dusk when we got home but Andrew was determined to plant at least one tree last night and he did. One thing you need to know about digging in Arizona is it's very difficult because the ground is very hard. Our backyard has about 6 inches of "digable" dirt until we get down to the hard pack, which Andrew discovered. Someone commented to us that if you want to dig a hole in Arizona you do it during the monsoon season other wise you're not really digging you're chipping and hacking. To cure the digging issue Andrew soaked the ground and then planted the Tangelo tree. The hole for the Lemon tree was a little different he started digging that hole when he was done planting the Tangelo tree and soaked it in water and then he had me fill the hole with water before he got home today so it would be easier to dig.

He will probably get the Grapefruit tree into the ground tomorrow and the peach and pear trees on Saturday.

Funny story; Andrew came home from work today and asked if I had blogged about the fruit trees yet. I said no, why don't you do it? His response? You do it so much better, and if you do it, it will actually get done. I think it's funny, and so here is Andrew's exciting news as told by me. :)
